Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA, early January 1939

In his account of the Ross family’s journey Ralph Colin Ross describes how, after leaving Chicago for New York City, they passed through Cleveland, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA,1 even though he omits to mention the northerly route they took via Wisconsin and Michigan before passing these places. From there they probably went on to visit the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA (see item Phillips Academy), as it is unlikely that they would have made a considerable detour to visit Pittsburgh once again after having left New York in mid-January. Therefore, this part of the trip can safely be situated in early January.

Incidentally, the Pittsburgh bridges Ross recorded on film were adduced as evidence of his alleged spy activities—see Lobbyist for a foreign government 2.
