As Ross left Cairns (and Australia) on November 1, 1929, the text was very likely written in October. The dateline says, “Cairns (North Queensland), in spring”. If Ross meant the southern hemisphere term of spring (starting at the end of September), this is plausible. But he does not consistently use the seasons this way in his datelines from Australia.
